Module 10: Collaborative Conversations

Jigsaw Graphic Organizer 3-2-1 Strategy 3: One of the primary key ideas from this week that sticks is that learning is done in a social setting. Students need to be able to interact with one another. This interaction needs to be planned. The second key idea is that each student needs to have a standard they have to meet and they need to be held accountable to the group so that way one person does not just do all of the work. The third key idea is that the work cannot be so easy that any one individual can complete the task on their own.  2: One strategy is a turn and talk. This is when a question is asked, each student is given time to reflect on the answer and then the instructor gives them 30 seconds- minutes of time to discuss what they came up with for an answer. The second strategy that I am excited to try is the jigsaw. This strategy means there is a lot of information that needs to be covered and each group is responsible for covering a section of the work. Each group...

Module 9: Exit Tickets

Graphic Organizer An exit ticket is a strategy that I used most days to gauge what students understood in class or what they need help with in the future. Students are expected to work individually. It does not help them as individuals to work together.  Empirical/Molecular Formulas Above is a set of notes that we will go through as a class. Students will engage in practice problems and can work with their partners.  At the end of the class, they will complete the exit ticket on slide 50. This would be printed and the students would turn in their own copy.  3-2-1 Strategy The biggest key takeaway from the textbook came from the ideas in chapter 23 on exit tickets in the classroom.  Fang and Park article: This article reminded me how important it is for teachers to provide explicit instructions for students regarding content vocabulary.  Using Multi-Modal Writing Tasks in Science Classrooms: This article talks about using different modes of tasks such as ...

Module 8: Strategy Application Blog

Part 1 Mendelian Genetics Article Text Dependent Questions Part 2 Graphic Organizer (1) why you chose the text-dependent questions/ graphic organizer or note-taking tool, I chose the graphic organizer tool because it is something that we have implemented in our Chemistry classes at Freedom High School. Every quarter, research students are required to complete a research like project and we use a graphic organizer as seen above as a way to start the project. We call the initial portion their background research because they do the research to answer questions on the unit and project.  (2) how it is useful to learning and understanding the particular content you selected, and The students will follow the questions and will have to be engaged on their own to answer the questions. Answering the questions alone will not be enough to make them proficient in the content but it is a good start in getting them involved.  (3) and how you envision using it in your classroom. As sta...

This has to be a careful process because too much time cannot be spent, so everything must be effective. Next y...

Module 4: Digital Jumpstart (DJ) for Protein Synthesis

Protein Synthesis text that describes the process : This text breaks down the process of protein synthesis. Students can read this and find areas they do not understand that can be brought up later.  Digital Jumpstart on Protein Synthesis : Creating this digital jumpstart was fun, and is something I generally do verbally when talking through a unit. I now recognize, this is something that can be done digitally and creatively to get the students engaged and to help build their background knowledge. I remember from a previous semester class that schema is a framework for how we understand and comprehend concepts. Having the digital jumpstart allows students to use this framework to build a base that they can build off of. The strengths of my DJ is that many of the slides are used in the notes given for that topic. Once students have a base, and they review the material, it will make it easier for them to make connections to the topic. I used multiple examples for some of the t...
