Module 1: Anticipation Guide Blog

The anticipation guide for my future class is pasted in the link below. It contains the lesson students will use while learning about the 8 characteristics of life in a biology classroom.

Characteristics of Life Anticipation Guide

The article students will read during this lesson is linked in the assignment but can be found again below.

"8 Characteristics of Life"

My strategy of choice for this lesson is the anticipation guide. As a teacher, this can be used as a way to gauge prior knowledge in students, and have them tell you as the teacher was each statement means to them. At this point in the lesson it will be important to make sure the students understand that there are no incorrect answers. It is okay to say what you believe and even if it sounds silly coming out of your mouth, there will be room for growth later. If the students seem to have a heavy grasp on the content already then the lesson could be used as more of a review. Once the students have agreed or disagreed with each comment, the students will read through the article. After they have read, they will need to go back and answer the questions the second time. Students will need to provide an explanation for why they chose this answer. Having to write an explanation can push the kids into the reading for  a second time, and will give them a chance to comprehend what they read.

This can impact deeper learning because it can be an interactive experience to get students engaged in their learning. It can be a student centered activity where they take ownership of their work. They have to read the article fully one time and will have to answer questions immediately afterwards. This will force them back into the text a second time. They will have to think of the reasoning behind why they chose what they chose. This process will cause them to learn the information on a deeper level.
