Module 2: Word Knowledge Chart
The word knowledge chart can be found on the link HERE!
The text that matches the word knowledge chart is from an online textbook used by LCPS. It is Virginia Miller & Levine Biology.
I chose this strategy due to its effectiveness in multiple areas. It allows the teacher and the students to figure out what is already known about this specific topic. Students get the chance to show this by defining a specific vocabulary in biology, and they then have to provide an example. This strategy can help a teacher determine any misconceptions that students may have when it comes to specific terms. After the students read, they get a chance to see how they answered the question previously and be content with their answer if they understood the vocabulary well or they can choose to update based on the way the words were used within the text. I believe this will be a great introduction to a unit. It is okay if the students do not understand everything before you begin but by the end, it can give better background knowledge on a topic that students can better understand when you get deeper into the unit.
I anticipate this strategy will impact deeper learning because students will be reviewing disciplinary vocabulary that is necessary for their success in the unit. They will have to think about what they already know, they will have to read through text and be actively engaged to find the correct vocabulary. Define the vocab based on its use within the text and provide an example. This can come before we dig deeper into the lesson. The repetition, and the exposure will be beneficial when it comes to student success.
