Module 10: Collaborative Conversations
3-2-1 Strategy
3: One of the primary key ideas from this week that sticks is that learning is done in a social setting. Students need to be able to interact with one another. This interaction needs to be planned. The second key idea is that each student needs to have a standard they have to meet and they need to be held accountable to the group so that way one person does not just do all of the work. The third key idea is that the work cannot be so easy that any one individual can complete the task on their own.
2: One strategy is a turn and talk. This is when a question is asked, each student is given time to reflect on the answer and then the instructor gives them 30 seconds- minutes of time to discuss what they came up with for an answer. The second strategy that I am excited to try is the jigsaw. This strategy means there is a lot of information that needs to be covered and each group is responsible for covering a section of the work. Each group contributes to the big picture of the entire class.
1: My biggest question each time learning about that strategy is what does it look like when it is effective? There are so many ways of doing something and I have learned that everything is about execution. Execution is the hardest part about being a teacher.
I have the same question at the end. I only know how the strategies I've personally participated in as a student are supposed to look, and it's not like there's some centralized rubric for these practices. Finding videos online might be the best option.

ReplyDeleteHello Jason! You are so right about having to plan interaction between students. In my own blog post, I mentioned a question about how good classroom management can foster better collaboration between students. If collaborative activities are not planned carefully, I can imagine the classroom can turn chaotic quickly. It's so important to plan carefully and stay organized as teachers!
